Almond Spread

Almond Spread

Overview

Almond (Prunus dulcis)

Native to south-west Asia. There are two types, sweet and bitter. Sweet almonds are the most familiar edible type for eating nuts, almond meal or almond oil. The almond tree is larger than the peach, lives longer and is strikingly beautiful when in flower.

he tree grows to 3-7 metres and has pink or white flowers which bloom in spring. The fruit resembles the peach until it approaches maturity, then as it ripens the leathery hull splits open, curls outward and then discharges the nut.

Almonds are the most alkaline of all nuts, that alone is a major benefit. Taken regularly, one handful of almonds per day is an optimum way to ensure proper nerve functioning, nerve transmission and correct muscular and glandular activity. Almonds are an excellent source of calcium and magnesium.

Leading exporting countries of shelled almonds are United States of America, Spain, Italy, Iran, Portugal & Morocco. Almonds are being harvested in increasing quantities in the Murray River region of Victoria and South Australia.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is there oil in the top of the jar?

Melrose nut spreads are made from 100% lightly roasted nuts.

Unlike most peanut butters the natural oils in Melrose nut spreads are not subjected to hydrogenation. In normal spreads this hydrogenation turns liquid oils into solids so that they will not separate out. However hydrogenation also produces trans fatty acids and these have negative health effects.

  • Melrose nut spreads contain only natural oils.
  • Melrose Nut spreads contain no hydrogenated Oils.
  • Melrose nut spreads contain no trans fats.

When using Melrose nut spreads, simply stir in the natural oils. Do not pour off the oil as this will leave you with a dry spread.

Aren't nuts fattening?

Nuts are nutritious health promoting foods and when eaten in moderation have no association with weight gain. Although nuts are generally high in fat, this fat is mostly monounsaturated or polyunsaturated fat. Nuts also have a high satiety value (i.e. they make you feel "full" for a relatively low kilojoules intake which may benefit weight loss.
