RMIT Researcher in Breast Cancer Breakthrough

In a study conducted on volunteers in Melbourne, Leah Williamson from RMIT's Food Science and Technology School has made a breakthrough finding into the role of estrogens in breast cancer.

'We're now accustomed to the idea of good fats and bad fats, and good cholesterol and bad cholesterol,' Ms Williamson said. 'It is widely accepted that there are also good estrogens that are protective against breast cancer and bad estrogens that can increase the risk of a woman developing breast cancer.'

The good estrogen is 2-hydroxyestrone, the bad estrogen is 16-alpha hydroxyestrone.

A paper in the American Journal of Psychiatry from Gordon Parker, Neville Gibson and other colleagues at the School of Psychiatry and Black Dog Institute at the University of NSW argues that diet and lack of omega-3 fatty acids typically found in seafood play a strong role in mood disorders.
