Nourishing Your Microbiome During the Festive Season
I’m sure you’ve heard before gut health is the cornerstone of your overall health and immunity. Why is gut health so important? Gut bacteria assist in food breakdown, help produce essential nutrients and allow for greater nutrient bioavailability (via pre-digestion). Without the right balance, nutrient production, absorption, digestion and assimilation is sub-optimal. This has powerful implications for health and vitality; immunity and protection from food allergies and intolerances; cognition, memory and overall brain health; natural detoxification pathways and the list goes on… What we consume can either support the growth of good or bad bacteria so I encourage you to choose a diet rich in diverse plants and wholefoods. Here are some of my favourites:
Avocado and coconut cream are high in fatty acids which are associated with favorable changes in gut microbiota composition. Healthy fats provide the body with a concentrated source of energy which stops you from reaching for high sugar foods which feed the not-so-friendly bacteria in the gut health.
Chia seeds are one of nature’s superfoods, high omega 3 and natural fibre content. Fibre is required to help food move more easily through the digestive tract, reduce bloating and improve bowel movements as well as feeding friendly bacteria in the gut.
Melrose Essential Greens is a great addition to meals that may be hard to incorporate greens into! It’s packed with phytonutrients such as chlorophyll, carotenes, folate, vitamins, minerals and dietary fibre which all have a positive impact on your digestion and overall gut health.
Cacao powder is not only delicious but contains a dose of fibre, which helps to facilitate digestion and keeps you regular.
How will you nourish your microbiome this Christmas?
